The new intermicronational prize will award awards in 3 categories thanks to the deliberations of an intermicronational jury made up of members from each continent.
A major event for the micronational world
Next Saturday, September 21, the town of Aigues-Mortes will be the scene of an exceptional evening with the very first edition of the Golden Flamingo Awards. This event will take place as part of the Godet d'Or micronational Gala, a tradition that has become over the years an unmissable event for fans of micronationalism. The 2024 edition will mark a historic turning point, as for the first time, the Golden Flamingo Awards will recognize the remarkable achievements of various micronations across the world.
The creation of the price
The Golden Flamingo Awards were created under the leadership of Princess Olivia-Eugénie, a fervent defender of the development and recognition of micronations. Originally, the Gala du Godet d'Or was simply a ball organized for the citizens of the Principality of Aigues-Mortes. However, over the years it has attracted an increasing number of participants from various micronations, transforming this event into a true celebration of micronationalism.
It is in this context that Princess Olivia-Eugénie considered the creation of a universal prize intended to recognize the exceptional contributions of micronations. During her initial reflections, she spoke with Queen Carolyn of Ladonia, who informed her of similar projects underway in American micronations, such as the Norton Prize and the Micronational Hall of Excellence. Convinced that Europe should also have its own prestigious prize, the Princess continued her project, convinced that the Golden Flamingo Awards could perfectly coexist with other international distinctions, like the Oscars and the Palme d'Or in the field of cinema.
The operation and spirit of the Golden Flamingo Awards
The founding principle of the Golden Flamingo Awards is their universal vocation. The constitution of the jury, inspired by that of the Cannes festival, reflects this ambition. For this first edition, the jury is made up of 13 members, representing micronations from all continents, with particular attention to diversity in terms of age, political opinions, and gender parity. Princess Olivia-Eugénie, as president of the jury, ensured that each member was chosen to guarantee maximum impartiality.
The jury will be renewed each year, with the only constant being the presence of Princess Olivia-Eugénie as Honorary President, responsible for ensuring compliance with the rules of impartiality. After each award ceremony, the outgoing jury will elect the president of the next jury, who will in turn select 12 new members.
For this first edition, three categories will be rewarded: the micronation of the year, the most promising micronation, and the most creative micronation. Other categories are being considered for future editions, such as the most "fun" micronation and the micronational project of the year. The aim is to reward and encourage diversity and creativity within the micronational world, while providing recognition to young, burgeoning micronations, unlike the Norton Prize which honors contributions over a period of at least ten years.
A feverish wait before the big evening
At present, the intermicronational jury of the Golden Flamingo Awards has not yet revealed the names of the micronations nominated in the three competing categories. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on RTAM.TV, the national television of the Principality of Aigues-Mortes, via its Facebook page. The Microcosme.info team will be present to cover the event, collect the impressions of the representatives of the winning micronations, and offer you a detailed report of this evening which already promises to be memorable.
