The results of the sixth election of the Secretary General of Microfrancophonie fell on October 27, 2024 at 8:00 p.m., marking the re-election of Dominic Desaintes, outgoing Secretary General, with a total of 13 votes against 8 for his competitor, Rémi Leprince-Ringuet. This victory, although comfortable, turned out to be more contested than expected, with half of the members not having supported the outgoing Secretary General. Dominic Desaintes, who is starting a new mandate, will have to convince and bring together a part of the electorate who remains skeptical of his style of leadership sometimes considered impulsive.
The campaign, which took place without an official debate, highlighted a form of imbalance in the communication of the candidates' proposals. Dominic Desaintes was indeed more offensive, publishing seven messages compared to three for Rémi Leprince-Ringuet, his opponent. Exchanges were limited to publications on social networks, in particular in the Microfrancophonie Facebook group.
Despite a less active communication strategy, Rémi Leprince-Ringuet, currently Deputy Secretary General for Culture of the organization, made a big breakthrough, collecting 8 votes. His discretion and his youth, however, seem to have worked against him, revealing a perception of a lack of combativeness, even if his ideas were not lacking in interest. This score, encouraging for a first election, nevertheless demonstrates that its proposals resonated with some of the members.
As for Dominic Desaintes, he promised, in his latest publications, to approach this new mandate with greater listening and a more consensual spirit. Expectations are high, both from those who supported him and from the voters he will have to win back. Its reform program, which aims to adapt the statutes of the Microfrancophonie to changes in the organization, will have to be quickly implemented to respond to the challenges of a growing structure.
This election, marked by divided opinions, nevertheless testifies to the institutional solidity of the Microfrancophonie. It asserts itself as a model of resilience and organization in the micronational world. The new mandate of Dominic Desaintes promises to be decisive for the future of the organization, which is opening up to a process of reform expected by its members.
In short, the Microfrancophonie closes this ballot on a note shared between continuity and the desire for change, thus embodying the dynamism and singularity of this unique institution.
